David’s Gift was started in 2012 with zero money in the bank. Our lawyer’s fees for our incorporation were paid by donations, and then we’ve received donations for each funeral we’ve paid. We have had a few fundraisers, with the intention of the funds being used to file for 501(c)3 status, but a funeral always comes up. With that being our purpose, we’ve always choosen to pay the funeral expenses over the filing fees with the IRS. Earlier this year we recieved a donation to cover website fees, bank fees, and other incidental expenses for this year. We were able to cover those expenses and have enough left to pay the filing fees with the IRS. We have been registered as a non-profit organization throught the IRS since the beginning, but we weren’t recognized as a tax exempt non-profit with 501(c)3 status. I filed for this on July 3, and just yesterday received a notice from the IRS that we are now a 501(c)3 non-profit.
This will help us to secure funding from grants and other organizations, and to help more families with their children’s funeral expenses. It will also allow us to receive donations from several other online sites through purchases made by supporters, items sold by supporters, or direct donations from supporters. I have begun the process of registering for these affiliate links, and will be posting them in the upcoming newsletter.
